Navien NCB Series condensing combi boiler

Quick answer: The Navien NCB Series is a wall-hung condensing gas combi boiler: one unit provides both space heating and domestic hot water, so it can replace a boiler and a separate water heater. Navien specifies stainless steel primary, secondary and domestic hot water heat exchangers. Airmax installs and services NCB units and is CT licensed HTG.0414617-D1.

COMBI BOILER VS. BOILER PLUS WATER HEATER

A combi unit makes hot water on demand instead of storing it, so there is no tank to keep hot and no tank to fail. That suits a home replacing an aging boiler and an aging water heater at the same time, or a home short on mechanical-room space. Homes with very high simultaneous hot-water demand — several showers plus a tub fill at once — sometimes still do better with storage, which is a sizing question to settle before the equipment is ordered.

NCB VS. NPE: NOT THE SAME PRODUCT

Navien's NPE Series is a tankless water heater. Navien states that water heaters cannot be used in space-heating-only applications. If the goal is to heat the house, the combi-boiler line (NCB) is the relevant product. Getting this wrong is a common source of confusion when homeowners compare quotes.

WHAT INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Heat-loss calculation and domestic hot water demand sizing, gas line capacity check, new PVC venting, condensate drainage and neutralization where required, near-boiler piping, and commissioning. Local permitting applies. Airmax handles permitting and the gas and venting work as part of the installation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a combi boiler?

A combination boiler heats the home and produces domestic hot water on demand from a single wall-hung unit, so no separate hot water tank is needed.

What is the difference between the Navien NCB and the Navien NPE?

The NCB Series is a condensing combi boiler that provides both space heating and hot water. The NPE Series is a condensing tankless water heater; Navien states water heaters cannot be used for space-heating-only applications. For house heating, the NCB line applies.

Can a Navien combi boiler replace both my boiler and my water heater?

That is the intended use case. Whether it fits a specific home depends on the heat loss and on peak simultaneous hot water demand, both of which are checked during sizing.

Does a combi boiler run out of hot water?

It heats water on demand rather than storing it, so it does not run out the way a tank does. It is limited by flow rate instead, which is why sizing to the home's fixture count matters.

Does a Navien NCB installation need new venting?

Typically yes. Condensing boilers use their own venting, per the Navien installation manual, and a condensate drain path is also required.
